Inveterately, when people use their GSM phones abroad they get a new GSM card from a local retailer of cellular services. These companys may call their services directly to foreigners borrowing service with thier home country's cell phones.

It's a big industry in Europe; americans traveling abroad rent a sim likely with service for the time they are there. It will be the same as Iraq.

I met a woman who told me that her son, was able to use Sprint (not even a GSM provider) on the american undignified in Iraq. According to her Sprint worked out some special agreement.
I don't know if this is on the mark.

Hope I helped.

What is a good unlocked GSM phone to be used solely overseas?

I currently have Alltel and Nextel services. However, unfortunately, Alltel operates on CDMA network and Nextel operates on IDEN network which is almost unheard of abroad. I am planning to work, study, and travel to Europe and South America in the definitely of the summer. I need an unlocked GSM phone with a prepaid SIM card, but that's all I know. I understand Alltel currently have no incredible phone, and Nextel has the i930 as it only marketed world phone but I cannot afford to cough up another $400.00 for the phone because I burned-out enough as is with travel and all. So, please advise me on the proper venue as I'm quite oblivious. I know Cingular and T-Transportable operates on GSM network but I cannot contract myself to another mobile phone company until one contract is up which will be the end of next month (I cannot postponed that long). Thank you in advance as I greatly appreciate your advice.

motorola razr GSM gentle works overseas. i used it oversas and there is no problem.

Dependable news and bad news and a tiny bit of good news....

First, the good news.
Yes, the network operators can truly trace a mobile's location to within a few hundred meters. And the user doesn't even have to do anything.

Now the bad news...
They're not affluent to tell you unless it's an emergency - and I mean a REAL call-the-police/ambulance/fire exigency. Even though she's a minor and your daughter and you pay the bills, those records are confidential and only the police can get them and even THEY need a rationale.

Now the tiny bit of good news...
The technology for what you want is developing rather rapidly and it already exists for cars for about $12/month. So once your spot girl is old enough to drive in a few years (although it'll seem like a few minutes!) they'll probably have it all sorted out.
Also, almost providers consider you to log on to the account (I'm assuming you're paying for the account) and if a txt msg is SENT or a call is made or received, the website will direct you which city/town the mobile was in. Every provider is slightly different, so you might have to experiment a short. Call your provider's help desk and they'll give you thedetails on how to do this.
There is also one other little trick you could play, but it's variety of ... untruthful. You could tell your daughter that when she sends or receives an SMS, that you can look up her mechanical account and see which tower sent/received it. Of course, if she calls your bluff, she'll separate you lied to her. It's not the approach I would take, but...

Oh, and by the way...
1) SIM cards don't have an IMEI - that's the electronic serial number of the phone that has nothing to do with the SIM fated. Your phone has the same IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identifier) no matter what SIM card is in it (or out of it). You can find out the IMEI by dialing *#06# - and you might indigence to make a note of it in case the mobile is stolen.
2) The system can track a mobile either by IMEI or the SIM credit card.

Buyer beware!! When buying used GSM phone off craigslist and eBay

If you sketch on buying any phone used off Craigslist or anyone, match the serial number to the box, if it doesn't replica, chance is they got a ...
