How important are mobile internet and mobile applications?

Like on a cubicle phone. Actually cell phones are the only good example anyone can give. So they should call it.... cubicle phone internet or something.
How important is it? Is it going to overtake laptops and desktops? Is it thriving to die? Should we be developing web sites and applications now?
Are people only ever going to want smaller and smaller? Is it even matter-of-fact to do things from a mobile device?
Several pundits and any issue of wireless phone company's are betting that smart-phone-based internet will spring up faster than any segment.
The reasoning goes something like this. Everyone is more likely to get a phone first, extraordinarily in the 3rd world. If the phone also offers good access to the internet then why bother to move up to a computer?
For dirt appliance type issues this seems logical. But until a good voice activated way to "standard" is created its going to be a disaster for text related applications.

I went through Android website and Forum Nokia for mobile applications. Nokia website has so many choke about SDKs, FlashLite, J2ME so where should I start from as a beginner and what order should I follow?

I discern basic HTML, javascripting. Nothing more. Which is the best way to start off in developing mobile applications on Google Android? Also, what do I prerequisite to know to program for Google OpenSocial? Is there something more to J2ME and Google Android when you talk about Mobile Programming?
I'd say the situation to start is non-mobile applications. :)
It's almost like saying, "I want to program for national surety software, where do I start?" Most mobile phone apps and games are java applets, so I conclude the place to begin would be Java. Get yourself a beginner's Java book and start practicing. Once you get very familar, you can optimize your labour well enough that it will run well and leave a small footprint for a mobile device.
