Can I use my Singapore GSM mobile phone in the US with a local SIM card?

Upon disembarkation at San Francisco, I would like to insert a prepaid SIM card into my GSM phone. This would give me a local US mobile phone hundred while I'm in the US, and avoid exorbitant roaming charges. Are such cards available in the US?

I own a nokia 6585 and it is currently connected to the telecom NZ (027) network. I fervour this phone but I use a vodafone NZ sim card with another GSM mobile and I really want to use this phone. Please help!

You can not metamorphose CDMA phone to GSM - completely different technologies.
There are some phones which come two versions - CDMA and GSM (like Motorola RAZR or KRZR), but these are two diverse phones.
There are some CDMA/GSM phones, but your Nokia is not one of them.

i spend in india. i presently have a cdma mobile. i'm planning to switch to gsm. i don't hv much idea abt gsm connections. i'd like to recall where shud i apply for a new connection, wat all documents, etc. will be required (if any). i'd also like to know abt the terms 'recharge', 'top-up. thanks in headway.

CDMA phones are those that DONT use simcards where as GSM phones are those that USE simcards...to get a new GSM phone you'll need to volunteer a contract with a GSM carrier, the rest they will tell you!
