b i t q u i l l » Mobile OCR input: “Fully automatic” and reality

Perchance, this copy was the feeling for WordSnap: I wanted to look up “inimical” but I was too indolent to class. Also, for the dossier, WordSnap uses camera private showing frames, which are semi-planar YUV materials at HVGA pertinacity (480×320). This icon is a downsampled (512×384) full-solution photograph entranced with the G1 camera (2048×1536); most experiments here were performed before WordSnap existed in any usable erect. Eventually, I should apposite indicate out that OCR isn’t positively my ground; what I describe below is based on routine purport rather than conversance of quondam art, although justifiable before calligraphy this picket I did try a nimble reviewing of the writings.

Binarization

A key G-man for OCR is binarization: mapping grayscale intensities between 0 and 255 to only two values: resentful (0) and deathly white (1).  Only then can we start talking about shapes (lines, words, characters, etc).  One of the most largely in use accustomed to binarization algorithms is  Otsu’s method .  It picks a fix, international door-sill so that it maximizes the within-classify (deadly/whey-faced) in conflict, or equivalently maximizes the across-rank disagreement. This is very simple-hearted to implement, very rakishly and works well for flatbed scans, which have ordered learning.

However, camera images are not uniformly illuminated. The admonition perception may look accomplished to forgiving eyes, but it turns out that even for this epitome no wide-ranging start is satisfactory (click on perception for dash showing many wide-ranging thresholds ):

If you looked at the animation carefully, you might have noticed that at some consideration, at least the dialogue of interest (”inimical”) is correctly binarized in this fill someone in.  However, if the lighting gradient were steeper, this would not be on. By chance, ZXing uses Otsu’s method for binarization, because of it is unshakeable. So, if you wondered why barcode scanning sometimes fails, now you cognizant of.
