And - as a more recent question - why does the speaker start malfunctioning _before_ the mobile phone starts ringing?
A chamber phone is still sending and recieving radio signals even when you are not using it. These signals are comprised of letting the nearest fortress know that it is there, subscriber data, etc. When you recieve a call, several things happen before the phone even rings, for all practical purposes:
The tower verifies the phone is in range
The phone sends a signal back to the fleche indicating it is on and in range
The phone rings
Speaker systems sometimes make proper antennas because of the length of unshielded speaker wire. Sometimes a radio source (whether it be a air station or your cell phone sitting across the room) will induct a current into the demagogue wire. In the case of a nearby radio station, you can faintly hear it over the speakers.
